How the drive shaft works

The crankshaft is not actually a modern invention; it has been around since before the advent of the reciprocating piston engine. The ancient Romans were already operating a sawmill in Hierapolis in Asia Minor in the third century. The rotary motion of the mill wheel was converted into vertical motion with the help of a shaft and a connecting rod. The same principle that powers your Puch moped. The only difference is that the combustion engine works in exactly the opposite way. The movement of the moped piston is converted into a rotary movement. This is then transmitted via the moped clutch and gearbox.

The crankshaft of your Puch motorbike is exposed to incredible thermal and mechanical forces. For this reason, it must be manufactured with the utmost precision.
